Age 63, of Umpqua, Oregon, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2014 and she is resting in the Peace of God. She fought long and hard in her battle with Leukemia since March 2011. She was born on September 4, 1950 to Robert and Adeline (Rostagno) Hjort in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Gwen spent her early years in Wisconsin and the family moved to the northwest part of Oregon in 1956. In 1965 the family relocated to Roseburg, Oregon where Gwen attended Roseburg High School and graduated in 1968. Gwen attended Umpqua Community College where she was the Student Body President and received an Associate Degree in 1970. Gwen transferred to Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1972. Gwen continued her education while teaching and received a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Oregon in 1980. Gwen served as a public school teacher for 38 years primarily in the Roseburg School District as a first grade teacher. Gwen was also an adjunct Professor at Northwest Christian College in the early 2000’s. She continued to fulfill her love of God, children and education by serving as the Principal at St. Paul’s Lutheran School from 2010 to present. She was loved and will be missed by her husband, Claude E. Crane; Siblings Susan (Paul) Dumke, (Bonnie (Robert) Grisso, Ronald (Bernice) Hjort, Donald (Debbie) Hjort, Roberta (Debbie) Hjort, Jon (Rhonda) Hjort; Children Kyle (Karra) Crane, Brett (Rie) Crane; Grandchild (Hunter Creed Crane); numerous loving Nieces and Nephews and great Nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by both parents. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church located at 750 West Keady Ct., Roseburg, Oregon. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Paul’s Lutheran School Scholarship
