Don A. Barnes

Don passed away suddenly on August 18, 2014 after a lengthy illness. He was 74. Don was born March 8, 1940 in Helena, Montana, to Ogle and Ruth (Blomgren) Barnes. He grew up in the rural Helena area and began his working career at a very young age. He was driving tractor on the family farm at the age of five. His father was also a gold miner on the famous ‘Last Chance Gulch’. His dad became owner of his own business, ‘Helena Sand and Gravel’, where Don first learned the skills he put to use the remainder of his working career.

Don married Patricia Bowler on April 2, 1974 and their combined families relocated to Roseburg, Oregon, where Don began his 33 year career with Beaver State Ready Mix, Beaver State Sand and Gravel, and Roseburg Paving as their General Manager. When Beaver State sold, he continued his career with Teeco, LTM and ultimately Knife River in the same capacity. He retired in 2008.

Don is survived by his wife, Pat, his four children: Becky Carlson, her husband Rod and children, Trevor and Amy; Julie Cone, her husband Jeff and children Cody (wife, Alyssa) and Tyler; Kenneth Barnes and his children Dean and Megan; and Drew Barnes, his wife Lori and son Kyle. Also surviving are his sister Kay Matthes and her daughters, Dana Jensen (Keith), Roxie Lassen (James) and their families. Other surviving family members include Vangie and Russ Kuhn, several sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Richard Bowler, who will officiate at the memorial, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Ogle, mother Ruth, sisters Jo Ann and Cherie, and his two loyal four-legged companions, BoBo and Skookie.

A special thank you to Dr. Chuck Hundley and his nurse Margaret, for their years of compassionate and loving care.

Don was never without a project, something to be done - or “something that you can help me with” as he smiled and requested. He will be greatly missed….

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the Winston Community Center, 440 SE Grape Street, Winston, Oregon.

Anyone wishing to make donations can make them in Don’s name to Saving Grace Pet Adoption Center at PO Box 803, Winchester, OR 97495, or through their web site at
