Gerald Clyde Schwartz

Jerry passed away with his family at his side August 16, 2014 at the age of 69. Life began for Dad in February 1945 at Richardton, North Dakota. He was the oldest of four children born to Matt and Barbara (Morel) Schwartz. He grew up on the family farm outside Hebron, ND. Farm life included plenty of hard work and chores. He grew up fast and learned to drive a truck during harvest at the age of 8. Being the oldest he had to drive his siblings to school when he was 12. Highlights of Dad’s teen years include finally getting electricity to the farm house and then indoor plumbing. After graduating from Hebron High School, he attended the North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton, North Dakota, studying diesel and auto mechanics. Degree in hand he headed west and ended up in Eugene, Oregon, working at Walker Ford Tractor. He was a natural at hard work and the extra hours and soon became a lead mechanic. In 1970 Dad married Carolyn Attebury and adopted her two sons. They soon added another boy and finally a girl to the family. They all lived for a while on a small farm in Veneta. Life was full of work and farm chores. After a short time with Pacific Power at Toketee Falls, OR, Dad returned to his agricultural roots. He and two friends opened The Tractor Store on West 11th Avenue in Eugene in 1983. He enjoyed running a small business and put in plenty of long hours and the business was successful. He could usually be found there behind the counter giving veteran farmers and first time greenhorns alike tractor advice. Dad was there behind the counter right till the end. In addition to work, he enjoyed his grandchildren and classic cars. He was a long time supporter of 4H, FFA, and local High School Booster clubs. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Matt; mother, Barbara; sister, Diane Jarhaus; and brother, Gaylen Schwartz. He is survived by his sister, Alberta (Jack) Kroh, of Bismarck, ND; former wife, Carolyn Schwartz, of Eugene; sons Todd (Sherilyn) Schwartz, of Eugene; Will (Tracy) Schwartz, of Crow; and Matt Schwartz, of Atlanta; daughter, Joye (Jeff) Nuckolls, of Junction City; and grandchildren: Amy, Andy, Cameron, Ian, Ethan and Kyle. A celebration of his life and a BBQ reception will be held Saturday, September 13, 2014, at 10:30 am in the barn at the Blue Rooster Inn BnB, 82782 Territorial Road, Eugene, OR. In lieu of flowers remembrances can be made to your local 4H club, Future Farmers of America chapter, or High School Booster club. Please sign the guest book at smithlundmills.com.
