Jeffery Michael Rich

Passed away January 14, 2013 of congestive heart failure. He was a model for living life as he wanted, and he was a model for dying on one’s own terms. When he knew his poor health could not be restored he bravely quit taking all medications and embraced the process of dying. He died peacefully at home.

Jeff was born August 3, 1951, in Roseburg, Oregon to Joy and Arthur Rich. Born with a congenital heart defect which necessitated several surgeries, he exceeded everyone’s expectations for his physical abilities. Jeff loved to be active and he always worked jobs in the outdoors. He serviced log trucks, worked on a rock crusher and operated heavy equipment. In 1978 he established a construction company specializing in log homes, which he built all over the state. Jeff was an avid fisherman. He and his buddies caught salmon in most of the rivers in Oregon. Jeff retired to life beside the Umpqua River in 2003 where he practiced the arts of gardening, cooking, carving, beading and watching the river and its wildlife. Jeff is remembered as a generous and fun loving friend. He enjoyed discussing politics and appreciated a good joke. Jeff leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Karen; their son Tim (Jennifer) of New York City; daughter LeBrie (Bill) of Portland; his mother Joy of Roseburg; and brothers Stan (Debbi) of Corvallis; and Tim (Robi) of Lake Oswego; and many wonderful friends.

Friends will be invited to a celebration of Jeff’s life this spring.
