Joseph Coleman

Age 92, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on January 28, 2013 in Roseburg.

Joe was born in Worthington, West Virginia on April 15, 1920 to John and Elizabeth Coleman. When Joe was a young boy, the family sold their farm in West Virginia and purchased a farm/ranch in Harper, Oregon. He graduated from Harper High School and joined the Marines in 1941. He served with the 2nd Marine Division as a mortar crew leader on Guadalcanal and Bougainville Islands during World War II. He was later stationed at Camp Pendleton, California and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Joe married Naomi Gale Turk in Los Angeles on September 23, 1944. They were married 57 years. They moved to Myrtle Creek in 1947. Joe was employed as a millworker and Naomi was a homemaker. They returned to Harper in 1954. He worked for the Vale Irrigation District until retirement. In 1996 they moved back to Roseburg to be closer to family.

Joe is survived by his brother, Frank (Glenna) of Harper; daughters Vicki Tower of Roseburg and Cheryl Guyett of Winchester; son, Ron Coleman (Gail) of Roseburg; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Naomi in 2002; brothers Bill and John; sisters Dorothy and Esther; son Kenneth Turk; and grandson Brian Guyett.

The family wishes to thank the Roseburg VA Transitional Unit for their compassionate care of our father; and Dr. Lindy Gomez. A special thanks to Mary Enos, Dad’s home care provider.

Memorial services will be held in the summer
