Paul W Tamm

Passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2013 from complications from prostate cancer. Paul, 68, was born in Peekskill, New York on July 6, 1944 to Edward and Josephine Tamm and spent most of his childhood in Fontana, California, graduating from Fontana High School in 1962. Paul received his bachelors degree from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden Colorado, graduating valedictorian in 1966. Paul then obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1970. He spent his professional career at Chevron Research in Richmond California working in petroleum refining. Paul was an avid mountain climber, bicyclist and skier and met his wife on a hiking trip in British Columbia. He and Betty were married in 1975 and have one son, Colin, and two grandsons. Colin, his wife Jesi and the two boys, live in North Carolina. Paul is also survived by his sister Marianne and many nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.

Paul and Betty moved to Oakland Oregon in 1992 to enjoy a more rural lifestyle with good access to mountains and beautiful bicycling roads. Besides many adventures cycling and skiing Paul devoted his life to starting a vineyard, making wine, giving time to his church, and working on community projects. He liked being able to help with community events, projects like Oakland’s Park and Pavilion, and promoting sports activities to youth. This included promoting skate parks and initiating the Step Up bicycle program at Roseburg High School.

A memorial Service will be held at 11 AM at the Oakland Presbyterian Church on Monday February 25th. The church is located at 201 8th St., Oakland. The service will be followed by a reception to celebrate his life at his new tasting room at 137 Locust St. in Oakland (next to Tollys). In lieu of flowers the family would welcome your contributions to replace the play structure in Oakland’s City Park.
