Age 56, of Roseburg, Oregon, lost his battle with lung cancer with family at his side on Monday, February 25, 2013. Dave was born in Fruita, Colorado, on May 29, 1956 to Ray and Alma “Jean” (Finch) Cox. His family moved to Oregon in the fall of 1957 where his parents taught school for many years. He attended school in Sutherlin and graduated from Canyonville Bible Academy, Canyonville, in 1974. Dave was a National Merit Scholar, an outstanding honor that very few high school seniors achieve. He attended Oregon State University, Corvallis, and earned an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Oregon Institute of Technology, Klamath Falls, graduating with honors. Dave and Don Bailey formed a corporation in 1999, and purchased Fairhaven Income Tax and Bookkeeping Service in January 2000. As a licensed tax consultant and enrolled agent, he valued and appreciated the relationships he had with his clients, some he had served for over 20 years. He was especially touched by the kindness of others during his illness. Dave held a special place in his heart for cats. Cats were a large part of his daily conversations. He proudly wore cat t-shirts whenever possible and displayed his cat lover gifts and photographs at his office. Dave was the adoptive parent of cats, King, who is with him in heaven and “the twins” Jessie and Josie, whom he is watching over. Dave was preceded in death by his mother, Alma ‘Jean’ (Finch) Cox. He is survived by his father, Ray Cox; and his wife, Diana; a brother, Ken Cox and his wife, Anita and their children Scott and his wife, Nancy; and daughter, Jennifer; his sister, Carla (Cox) Duering and her husband, Brent and their children: Justin and his wife, Heather and their son, Forest and daughter, Grace their daughter, Leah and her husband, Doug and their daughter, Lucy. A private family gathering, inurnment and scattering of ashes will be held at a future date. His family suggests in memory of Dave that donations be made to New Beginnings SPCA, P.O. Box 1494, Roseburg, OR 97470; a donation of clean, reusable items to New Beginnings SPCA Thrift Shop, 1212 S.E. Stephens St., Roseburg; a contribution of time, as volunteers are always needed; adoption or just stop by and scratch a kitty for Dave. Visit newbeginningsspca.com to learn more about Dave’s beloved organization. It only seems appropriate to conclude with Dave’s favorite cat quote, “In ancient Egypt, cats were worshiped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this.” May he rest in purrfect peace.
