Boys Lacrosse: Roseburg boys top Marist in MWL opener

The Roseburg High boys lacrosse team found out Thursday that it still has plenty of room for improvement.

At least the Indians discovered as much in a winning effort, though.

After falling behind 3-1 to Marist in the second quarter, the Indians closed the half with three unanswered goals and closed the door with a big third, winning their Midwestern League opener 10-4 at Finlay Field.

Senior attack Jake Heverly poured in a game-high six goals, four of which were delivered consecutively in the third quarter to help Roseburg run away.

The Indians overcame 20 turnovers, 11 penalties and a shooting disadvantage of 28-22 to improve to 2-1 overall and bounce back from a 13-3 loss at West Linn last Saturday.

“Obviously with the penalties and turnovers, we can still clean a lot of stuff up,” Roseburg coach Dave Heverly said. “But we came back and played a really good second half, so I kind of expect we’ll continue along that path now.”

The penalties forced the Roseburg defense to play a man down frequently and even three men down at one point, leaving just McKinley Morrow, Zach Caddock and Cory King to fend for themselves.

It wasn’t until there were 31 seconds left in the second quarter that they took their first lead, 4-3, on Zach Aalberg’s score. Aalberg started the third quarter with another goal before Jake Heverly’s onslaught.

Aalberg, a senior, tallied three goals in the contest. Dominic Bello recorded one goal and two assists, and Logan O’Hara added two assists.

Senior goalkeeper Jake Zielinski collected eight saves.

“They all really kind of stepped up,” Dave Heverly said. “They had to.”

Marist, which was also playing its first MWL game, dropped to 2-2 overall.

The Indians are off until April 4, when they’re scheduled to host Thurston of Springfield in another Midwestern contest.
