Roseburg High juniors Luiz, Warren earn distinguished titles

WINCHESTER — Chelsey Luiz and Raechel Warren earned the featured titles Saturday night during the Greater Douglas County Distinguished Young Women Program held in the Jacoby Auditorium at Umpqua Community College.

Luiz was named the Distinguished Young Woman of Greater Douglas County. She is the daughter of Brandi and Jeffrey Luiz of Roseburg.

Warren was named the Distinguished Young Woman of Umpqua Valley. She is the daughter of Christi and Lennard Warren.

The two were awarded $500 scholarships for use at the college of their choice.

There were eight contestants, all Roseburg High School juniors, in the competition. Five judges from outside Douglas County determined the winners after the contestants competed in five categories: interview, talent, scholastic achievement, self-expression and fitness.

“It went well, the girls did a fantastic job,” said Stacy Nielsen-Clyde, chairman of the event. “The girls were all very excited and nervous at the same time. They all did well so it took a while for the judges to make their decisions.”

Luiz’ talent was singing and Warren performed on skates.

The first alternate was Cailey Frasier and the second alternate was Charis Barron.

The winner of the Scholastic Achievement Award was Courtney Fitzgerald and the winner of the Spirit Award was Jasmine Lyons.

Angel Ardito and Brittnie Stafford also participated in the event.

Luiz and Warren will advance to the Oregon Distinguished Young Women Program, scheduled for Aug. 3 in Salem.

Roseburg High senior Ally Malone is the reigning Oregon Distinguished Young Woman and will compete at the National Distinguished Young Women Program in Mobile, Ala., June 27-29.

The local program was formerly known as Douglas County Junior Miss.
