Prep Baseball: Roseburg wins in extras again

LA GRANDE — The Roseburg High baseball team may not want to make a habit of falling behind.

But for now, as long as the fifth-ranked Indians keep coming back, there will be no complaints.

The La Grande Tigers were the latest enablers on Wednesday, getting the Indians down to their last out before two runs tied the game in the seventh inning and another won it in the eighth, 8-7.

The Indians went 4-0 on their annual swing to the eastern side of the state and improved to 8-1 overall. It was the third time they’ve come back to win in extra innings. A day earlier, they scored eight runs in the seventh for a 14-10 comeback win over Pendleton.

Trailing 7-5 with two outs and no one on base, four straight Indians reached: Ryan Carhart singled, David Irvine walked, Cody Bassett hit an RBI single and Cody Watkins brought home the tying run with a ground ball to third base that was misplayed.

In the eighth, Tristan Guillen hit a one-out triple and scored the go-ahead run on Cody Walker’s single to left field.

Guillen, a senior outfielder, went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. He also tripled in the comeback against Pendleton.

Roseburg went up 4-0 in the first thanks to five walks and two hit-batters, but trailed 7-5 by the fourth.

Starting pitcher Brady Fuller went six innings and only four of his runs were earned due to Roseburg’s season-high of four errors. Brady Haskett threw two innings of scoreless relief for the win.

Josh Gambill had three of La Grande’s 12 hits. The Tigers fell to 4-2.

Roseburg returns to action next Thursday against Ashland at Legion Field. The first Southern Oregon Hybrid game will follow on April 9 at Grants Pass.
