Bryon Smith wins PBA Regional

Bryon Smith of Roseburg, co-owner of Ten Down Bowling, was victorious in a PBA Northwest Regional at Caveman Bowl on March 24.

The 39-year-old, a Sutherlin High School graduate, knocked down 4,727 pins over 22 games and won $2,000. Dean Bollinger of Portland finished second and Kevin Croucher of Grants Pass was third, while Adrian Anderson of Roseburg finished 14th (1,627 pins in eight games). The top 12 advanced to match play.

It marked the ninth PBA Regional title for Smith, whose lone championship on the PBA Tour came in 2003 at the USBC Masters. Smith has rolled 13 perfect games during his PBA career.

Smith traveled to Indianapolis, Ind., last week for the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions. He finished 49th.


UVA 14U team nets title in Pacific Northwest qualifier

The Umpqua Volleyball Academy 14U Black team of Roseburg went unbeaten at the recent Pacific Northwest Junior Olympics Qualifier tournament, winning 18 consecutive sets en route to a 9-0 record and tourney championship.

UVA defeated Laguna Beach 25-21, 25-12 in the title match.

The team was comprised of Sammy Nash, Kourtney Lomica, Karey Lomica, Jessica Simonis, Riley Heath, Emma Bannister, Mackenzie Short, Karsyn Ramsey, Sam Sjogren, Sierra Mauro and Avry Hansen. Roger Cash is the head coach, Darin Lomica the assistant coach and Loretta Cash the team representative.


Premier Insurance wins volleyball title

The Roseburg Women’s Volleyball Association completed its league season in late February and held its end-of-the-year banquet on March 4 at China Palace.

The Premier Insurance-Allan Painter team won the league championship with a 41-3 record, followed by Put On Annex (37-7) and Oregon Tax Specialists. Also participating were Benzel Excavation (28-16), Jay N. Gade M.D./PHD (28-16), Valley Tanning (23-21), The Zoo (19-25), Bobby Geyer Construction (17-27), Driver Dentistry (15-29), D.A. Davidson & Co. (15-29), Umpqua Dairy (8-36) and China Palace (4-40).

Receiving team awards were Oregon Tax Specialists and China Palace (Co-Most Inspirational), and Bobby Geyer (Most Improved). Debbora Bergerson from The Zoo and Jody Brecht from China Palace were voted by the referees as Co-Sportsperson Award recipients.

Officers selected for the 2013-14 season were President Arwyn Buller, Vice President Macy Sullivan, Secretary/Treasurer Sue Bladorn and Seargeant at Arms Karen Smith.


Softball meeting scheduled tonight

The Douglas County Men’s Softball Association and Coed League will hold a meeting at 7 tonight at Clint Newell Motors, 1481 NE Stephens St.

Any coaches or representatives on teams wishing to play in either league should attend. Rosters and payments are due by April 16, with the men’s league scheduled to begin play on April 24.

Special Olympics sign-ups Saturday

Special Olympics Douglas County will be holding its spring/summer sign-up meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Roseburg Alliance Church, 2165 Garden Valley Blvd.

Those planning to sign up are asked to attend. Sports offered will be track, softball, bocce and golf.

Athletes in need of new physicals must turn them in no later than April 10 in order to be eligible to participate in the Regional and State Games.
