College Baseball: Beavers awake, beat Portland

CORVALLIS — Jerad Casper, Danny Hayes and Jake Rodriguez all drove in two runs as the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team extended its win streak over Portland to 16 games with a 7-5 win over the Pilots Tuesday night at Goss Stadium.

The Beavers (23-4), down 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, pushed two runs across the plate in sixth inning and four more in the seventh for the win. Nine of the club’s 16 wins during the streak have come at Goss Stadium.

“We started slow but picked it up and it’s good to get back into the ‘W’ category,” Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. “Offensively, we did what we needed to do, especially toward the end of the game.”

Rodriguez capped off Oregon State’s offensive night with a two-run home run during the four-run seventh. It came two batters after Hayes roped a double to left, scoring Michael Conforto and Dylan Davis.

Scott Schultz picked up his sixth save of the season with three innings of relief. The win went to reliever Cole Brocker, who picked up his first career victory at Oregon State. The right-hander allowed four hits and a run while striking out four in 2 2/3 innings. Dan Child started for the Beavers and did not figure in the decision after going 3 1/3 innings.

The Beavers jump back into Pac-12 Conference play Friday with a 6 p.m. game at UCLA.
