Roseburg Roundup: RHS girls tennis team tops South Medford

Roseburg’s top doubles team of Hannah Cooperrider and Lauren Baque stumbled through the first half of their match before charging to the finish line to head a big doubles effort in Southwest Conference action, helping the Indians to a 5-3 dual win over South Medford Tuesday at Hoffman Tennis Center.

Cooperrider and Baque lost their first set to Riley Finnegan and Abi Borg, 6-3, and appeared to be on their way to an early exit trailing 5-1 in the second. They rallied back, though, and stole the match with wins of 7-5 and 7-5.

“(They) played their best match of the season,” RHS coach Shari Notenboom said. “It was the match of the day.”

The Indians’ Nos. 3 and 4 doubles teams won in straight sets. Carissa Roman and Monica Hall defeated Erin Viera and Kali Curtis (6-4, 6-2) and Sarah Royce and Morgan Novak routed Kayla Fain and Andrea DeVries (6-1, 6-4).

The Indians split four singles matches to earn a team win. Claire Hittle took the No. 2 match against Hayley Steadman (7-5, 6-4) and Varneet Brar was sharp in the No. 3 match to take down Brittan Reese (6-2, 6-0).

BOYS LACROSSE

Roseburg 13 Sheldon 3

Roseburg hasn’t beaten Sheldon on the football field for many years, but that’s not the case in boys lacrosse.

The Indians improved to 4-0 in Midwestern League play and 6-1 on the season with a 13-3 victory over the Irish Tuesday night at Finlay Field.

Jake Heverly led the rout with three goals and four assists. Dominic Bello added three goals, Nick Ellis and Zach Aalberg two goals apiece, Logan O’Hara one goal and two assists, and Travis Dever and Ben Hervey one goal each.

The Indians led 7-0 at halftime.

“We played solid the whole game,” said RHS coach Dave Heverly. “McKinley Morrow, Corey King and Jake Zielinski played really well defensively.”

Roseburg plays Sprague in a nonleague game in Salem Friday night.
