Harry Martin (Mart) Hakanson, Sr.

April 2, 1926 - April 7, 2013

Mart was born April 2, 1926 to John Hakanson and Esther Warren Stearns in Oakland, Oregon, and died peacefully on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the age of 87. At his request no public services will be held. Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay. Mart was the owner of the “Surplus Centers” located in Coos Bay and Roseburg. He opened the Roseburg store in July 1969 followed by a Coos Bay Store in 1973. Over the years Mart met many wonderful people and cherished his time with them. The Surplus Center was such a perfect fit for Mart since he loved the outdoors, fishing, boating and firearms and most of all, people. His kindness is remembered by so many that visited his stores. Mart finally retired from the business in 2006. Later in life his passion became Ballroom Dancing and the wonderful Big Band Music that accompanied it. Mart was a member of the NRA, Elks and OHA. Mart was preceded in death by his wives: Alice Kline (Hakanson) and Goldie Snodgrass (Hakanson); and brothers: Irving (Bud) and Ralf Hakanson. Mart is survived by his son, Marty Hakanson; his brother, John Hakanson; sister, Marianne Kadas; two grandchildren: Colt Hakanson; and Shanel Hakanson; four great-grandchildren: Charly Angel and Brock Martin Hakanson ; Cyrus and Ellionna Aikens; very special friends: Anita Woods; Chuck and Vickie Traver; Ralph and Marie Thomas. He will be remembered by all of us who knew him. Memorial contributions can be made to the Community Presbyterian Church of Oakland in memory of his Mother Esther Warren Stearns Pealer or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
