Roseburg Roundup: Stadter, Ball 2nd at team championships

PORTLAND — Roseburg High’s top doubles team of Sam Stadter and CJ Ball did nothing to hurt their future seed at this spring’s OSAA Class 6A tennis tournament.

With a second-place finish, the duo did plenty to help the Indians at the first edition of the Oregon High School Team Tennis Championships, too.

Ball and Stadter, a junior and a senior, nearly dropped their first match of the tournament. Their play sharpened up over the course of the weekend, though, and they pushed Sunset’s Jared Lin and Ryan Chin in the title before falling 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Jesuit easily won the state’s unofficial team title with 71 points, but the Indians made a dent with 16.5 to place fifth overall out of 12 schools at the Portland Tennis Center and Tualatin Hills.

In order to advance to Saturday’s final rounds, individuals and doubles teams had to win both of their matches on Friday. Along with Stadter and Ball, Roseburg’s No. 4 team of Hunter Paschke and Nicholas Norlin-Pritchard accomplished the feat. Friday’s doubles matches were played using pro scoring — first to eight games.

Stadter and Ball fell behind in the first match against Lincoln’s Alex Johnson and Jeremy Nuss, 5-3, but rallied for an 8-6 win. After that, they took out Barlow’s Zac Blume and Daley McKay, 8-3.

The pair knocked off Jesuit’s No. 1 team of Alex Centurion and Tommy Mulflur in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-4. Lin and Chin took the first set of the championship, but Stadter and Ball evened it up and were serving up 2-1 in the third set.

Freshman Stefan Ball, Roseburg’s No. 1 singles player, lost his first match against Sunset’s Brian McKittrick, 6-4, 6-3. He bounced back in his second match, defeating Lake Oswego’s Alex Gatter, 6-0, 6-2.

Paschke and Norlin-Pritchard recorded their wins against Sunset’s Vendant Raol and Victor Lin (8-5) and South Salem’s Jimin Lee and Reid Zielinski (8-2).

TEAM SCORES — Jesuit 71, Sunset 46, Lincoln 40.5, Grant 32, Roseburg 16.5, Sprague 13, South Eugene 11, Lake Oswego 5, South Salem 5, West Linn 4, Barlow 2, Central Catholic 1.
