Schools register kindergartners

Elementary schools throughout Douglas County are hosting registrations for incoming kindergarten students for the 2013-14 school year.

Parents should bring their children’s birth certificates and immunization records to the registrations.

To enter kindergarten this fall, children must turn 5 on or before Sept. 1.

Kindergarten registrations are scheduled at the following schools:

Camas Valley Elementary School: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 16 at the school, 197 Main Camas Road, Camas Valley. Information: 541-445-2131.

Sunnyslope Elementary School: 5 to 6 p.m. May 14 at the school, 2230 S.W. Cannon Road, Green. Information: 541-440-4192.

Tri City Elementary School: 1 p.m. May 6 at the school, 546 S.W. Chadwick Lane, Tri City. Information: 541-863-6887.


BLM Natural resources camp

The Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service are accepting applications from teens interested in attending the Resources and People Camp at Lake of the Woods, east of Medford.

Applications are due May 6 for the week-long camp, which is open to students aged 13 to 18 and starts June 16. The camp is designed to educate students about natural resource management. Activities include hands-on natural resource lessons, outdoor recreation and educational field trips. Participants learn about fire ecology, wildlife, forestry, fisheries, archeology, wetlands and botany and possible careers in those fields. Students will also get to do many outdoor activities, including hiking, birding, swimming and canoeing.

The cost for camp registration is $225. Financial aid is available.

Student play debuts

The Riddle High School Drama Club will put on the play “Fading Gray, A Civil War Drama” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Riddle Elementary School.

Riddle High drama adviser Martin Follose wrote the two-act play, which follows the aftermath of an unlikely bond between a Union and a Confederate soldier.

Admission is $5.

Jo Lane to host musical

Joseph Lane Middle School students will present the musical “Once Upon a Mattress” May 9-11.

A comic retelling of “The Princess and the Pea,” the play starts at 7 p.m. for all three performances in the Jo Lane gym, 2153 N.E. Vine St., Roseburg.

Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students and seniors and $20 for a family. All proceeds benefit the Jo Lane drama department.

Natural playscapes

Cobb School will host a workshop on Saturday with the creator of natural “playscapes” for children.

Leon Smith of the design firm Earthplay will talk about building natural play areas and give suggestions to those considering creating one. The workshop is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at Cobb School, 1281 Walnut St., Roseburg.

The presentation is open to the public and Cobb School will serve a light lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Professional development training certificates will be available for childcare providers.
