Prep Golf: Roseburg boys triumph on home course

Monday wasn’t the first time the Roseburg High golf team’s home course had been good to the Indians this year, but it was undoubtedly the most important time.

The Indians won at Roseburg Country Club on Monday for the second time this month — this time in a Southwest Conference round, the second of three in the regular season.

Seniors Drew Groshong and Arie Yraguen shot matching 5-over-par 77s to finish in a four-way tie for second place. They led the Indians to a team total of 314, good for an 11-stroke win in the eight-team meet.

Sheldon’s Ben Wanichek was the medalist at 3-over, but the Irish fell to third place — one stroke behind North Medford — after winning the first SWC round last week at the Eugene Country Club, where Wanichek also won medalist honors. Roseburg’s two-round total of 328 is three strokes better than Sheldon’s.

Devin Caylor shot a 7-over 79 for the Indians while Kai Seely bounced back from a front-nine of 46 to shoot a 35 on the back, besting all of his teammates.

Groshong and Yraguen’s second-place efforts matched those of Joseph Kuehn of Sheldon and Taylor Klemp of North Medford.

RHS will be in action again Wednesday at Centennial Golf Club in Medford for the Phoenix Invitational.
