As most called him, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the age of 82. He was born on August 13, 1930, to Ralph and Bessie Parks in Protem, Missouri. On September 28, 1951 he married Katherine L. Beeler, who he was married to for the next 57 years, upon her passing in 2008. They moved from Missouri to Oregon in 1954 and settled in the Winston area where they raised their two children, Pam and Greg. There he became a lifetime member of the VFW Post 9745. He also served in the US Army as a Paratrooper from 1952-1954. Herman worked for Roseburg Forest Products for 31 plus years, before retiring in 1989. At first he missed working, but soon found other things to keep himself busy. One of those things was woodworking. He loved to spend time in his shop making things for friends and family. If someone saw something they liked that he had made, they soon had one of their own. He was a man that loved to see and make others happy. In 2010 he was able to travel back to Missouri to visit his baby sister, Hazel, and go to his 60th class reunion. He enjoyed the whole trip very much. This same year in August he celebrated his 80th birthday with a party of his close friends of 50 plus years, having the time of his life. Anyone who knew him knew that what made him the happiest in life were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were his pride and joy, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for them at any time, including dancing to the Wii with Taylor and Baylie. They felt the same about ‘Papa’ as they called him. They will remember for many years the chocolate gravy and biscuits Papa would make for them and their friends when they spent the night. Papa was very proud of his chocolate gravy. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine; and son, Gregory; his parents, Ralph and Bessie; sisters: Hester; Hula; and Helen; and brother, RH. He is survived by daughter, Pam and husband Bill; grandsons: Trevor and Kevin Black; granddaughter: Amanda Parks; great-grandchildren: Hayley; Devin; Baylie; Taylor; Logan; Isaiah; sister, Hazel; many nieces; and nephews; and three special friends, Charlie Bennett; Dean Guhlke; and Ron Schelin. Herman, “Wayne”, “Papa” or Dad will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Special thanks to Dr. William Townsend and staff for the special care they took of him. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013, at 12:30 p.m. at Taylor’s Family Chapel in Winston, Oregon. There will be a potluck meal to follow at the Winston VFW Hall.
