Winston man in hospital after being struck on Interstate 5

A Winston man struck by a vehicle on Interstate 5 while he tried to retrieve a garbage can was in fair condition today at Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Joseph Hall, 32, was hit about 10 a.m. Wednesday at Milepost 120 by a northbound 2013 Jeep driven by Eliezer Polonsky, 70, of Greenwood Village, Colo., according to the Oregon State Police.

Polonsky tried to brake and swerve but was unable to avoid Hall, OSP Lt. Doug Ladd said. He said Hall was driving north when he saw the trash can on the highway. Hall pulled his vehicle over and attempted to remove it when he got hit.

Hall was transported by ambulance to Mercy. Ladd said Polonsky will not be cited in the incident. He said troopers are investigating the accident and may cite Hall.
