Man suspected in propane thefts in Roseburg

A 52-year-old Roseburg man cited and released on suspicion of stealing propane Friday was arrested on the same allegation Saturday and taken to jail.

Rex Eligio Tanberg, a transient, was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of third-degree theft, unlawful possession on inhalants and first-degree trespassing.

On Friday evening, Mercy Medical Center security reported seeing a man running from Kmart in the 2700 block of Stewart Parkway and into bushes, where he inhaled from a small bottle of propane. Police suspected Tanberg stole two propane bottles from Kmart.

The following morning, Tanberg is accused of stealing a bottle of propane from a Chevron gas station in the 2600 block of Diamond Lake Boulevard and hiding in blackberry bushes and poison oak. Officers reported going into a hard-to-reach area and arresting Tanberg when he refused to come out willingly.

Tanberg remained in custody today in lieu of $50,000 bail.
