Rodney Norman Melvin

Age 59, passed peacefully Tuesday, August 13, 2013 in Myrtle Creek, Oregon after a recent diagnosis of maxillary sinus cancer.

Rod, the son of Richard and Joan Melvin, was born March 19, 1954 in Oakridge, Oregon and attended schools in Riddle and Myrtle Creek. After high school, he worked for a short time at Dale’s Chevron followed by 29 years as a machine operator at Roseburg Forest Products sawmill in Dillard. In 2001, Rod decided to make a career change and attended a vocational school in Seattle, Washington earning his certification in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). After completing his program in 2002, Rod worked for Wescom in Roseburg, Oregon. In 2005 he joined the maintenance department at Seven Feathers Casino and Resort in Canyonville, Oregon.

Rod married Guyla Kennedy in 1973. They had two children, Micheal and Eric. They divorced in 1980. Rod married Patty Zintek Givens in 1982. They had one child, Chad, and Rod became the step-father to Patty’s son from a previous marriage, Dylan. They divorced in 2004.

Rod found great enjoyment in coaching his sons’ sports teams when they were young. He also had fond memories of the many summer vacations riding ATVs with his family and friends at the Oregon coast. His other interests included bowling, woodworking and auto mechanics.

He is survived by his best friend and partner Hellen Kelley of Myrtle Creek; brothers Rick Melvin (partner Donna) of Myrtle Creek, Bob Melvin (wife Susan) of Myrtle Creek, sons Micheal Melvin (wife Sarah) of Roseburg, Dylan Givens (wife Stefanie, grandchildren Kylee and Brennen) of Portland, Eric Melvin (fiance Rheta) of Riddle, and Chad Melvin (wife Megan and grandson Greyson) of Portland. Rod was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Becky Melvin Duper.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Tri-City Baptist Church, located at 158 Crest Dr., Myrtle Creek, Oregon 97457. Refreshments will be served at the church following the ceremony. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
