Once upon a time, August 14, 1961, there was born a blessing to parents Lorna and Bob Schulze, Shelly Kay. Shelly was raised by her mother Lorna and father Vic Jasper on the family ranch on North Gazely Road. Her childhood was filled with long lazy days playing with her siblings Debbie Malone (Bob), Steven Jasper (Tina), Kerriann Elliott (Jamie), Nathan Jasper (Jen), Richard Bland, Kimberly Dunn, Jana Larson.
Shelly fell in love with music at an early age and became a proficient and gifted piano player. She was a nurturer, she was gentle and loving. Her home was welcoming and full of joy. She was a phenomenal cook, seamstress and friend.
Shelly married Gerald Lee Bates on August 17, 1983 and was blessed with seven children who became the center of her whole world. Hannah and daughter Aaliyah, Rachel and son Zelek (Jeremy), Sarah, David, Emily, Annaliesa, and Nathaniel.
Shelly married Wayne Smith in March of2010 and spent the remainder of her time in Hood River.
Shelly was preceded in death by her mother Lorna Rae Jasper, her birth father Robert Schulze, and brother Frederick Schulze.
Shelly Kay went home to be with her lord on August 13, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. Her warm heart and gentle spirit will be missed by many. A celebration of life will be held Saturday August 24, at 11:00 A.M. at New Beginnings Church 0f God in Roseburg.
