She lived in Douglas County her whole life and graduated from Roseburg High School in 1932. She was the oldest of six children. On January 31, 1937 she married Jack Chapman and they had three daughters, Raina, Sherrill and Kay. Early in her marriage she was employed as a secretary for an attorney and later at the News-Review.

When her daughters were in school she was active in PTA and Camp Fire and worked at Chapman’s Pharmacy and later as secretary at First Presbyterian Church. In her later years she worked at Mercy Hospital in the Medical Records Department, retiring in 1991 at the age of 76.

She is survived by daughters: Raina Hahn (Darrell) and Kay Baird (John); son-in-law Jess Torres; four grandchildren: Brandi Baird, Gregg Baird (Michael Buonocore), Brad Hahn (Janel) and Jolie Middleton (Rich); two great-grandchildren: Rachel Smart and Jason Smart and five great-great-grandchildren: Arianna, Aidyn, Kyla, Ella and William Smart and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ursis and Evalyn, husband Jack, daughter Sherrill, sister Verla Utne and brothers Delvin, Shirley, Elwood and Eldon.

The most important things in her life were her family, friends, books, the North Umpqua and trips to the coast.

She was a treasure and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday August 24 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the church memorial fund or the Nature Conservancy.
