Lily Fern Evens

July 6, 1932 to July 9, 2013

Lily was born Lily Fern Hensley in Duncan, Oklahoma, to Aeolus and Inez Hensley. She picked cotton there at a young age of four. She went out west and lived with her maternal grandmother, Flora Hensley in Ocean Park, California. Flora either managed apartments or a boarding house. That’s where she met Robert Evens. They were married on October 22, 1949. They had four children. Their first son Robin Evens was born in 1950. He had Downs Syndrome and only lived four months. Richard Evens was born on June 4, 1952. Theresa Evens was born May 5, 1954. Walter Evens was born August 5, 1958.

They first lived with Robert’s parents in Santa Monica. In 1959 they moved to Lompoc, California. After that they returned back to southern California living in Costa Mesa. In 1964 they purchased a home in Norco, California where they stayed until September of 1974. While there Lily was first a homemaker, then a cocktail waitress working at the Corona Bowling Alley and then the Red Barn in Norco. She also had a short stint as a newspaper delivery person.

They moved to Oregon, first living in Umpqua then settling in Sutherlin. When they couldn’t find anyone to groom their poodle Oliver, they located someone who could teach Lily how to be a dog groomer. They owned and managed the Pampered Poodle in various locations until it was closed around 2004. Lily had survived lung cancer with surgery in 2002 but the effects and emphysema only allowed her to work a few more years before retiring.

Robert passed away on February 15, 1997. They were married 47 years.

In 2001 she met John Andrade of Winston. They were together until John’s death on August 1, 2012.

Lily was very active in the Sutherlin Lioness club holding many positions including President. After moving to Oregon she took up and enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. She also did quite a bit of canning.

With her COPD and having to be on oxygen 24/7 her activities were limited. In her later years she enjoyed going out to eat and reading. She also bowled on the Senior League. She attended as many family reunions and weddings as she could.

Lily is survived by her sons: Richard and Walter Evens (Theresa passed away on September 19, 1991); her brothers: John; Don; Dave; Jack; and Larry Hensley; as well as her sister, Betsy Dukokus. Her children were all married more than once so there are many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; as well as step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. There are too many at this time to list or count. She loved them all!

Although Lily was not a religious person she did believe in God and the Golden Rule, always treating others the way she herself would want to be treated.

Her “Celebration of Life” will be held at the Sutherlin Community Building at Central Park on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at 1 p.m. Anyone that knew her is welcome. Please RSVP Walter at 541-459-3489 or e-mail at so we can have an idea of how many to expect. There will be refreshments served afterward.
