Dellmer Daniel Franklin


July 23, 1923 - September 8, 2013

Dellmer Daniel Franklin died on September 8, 2013, in Roseburg. He was born July 23, 1923, in Cottage Grove, Oregon, to Daniel David Franklin and Ara Elsie Tarr. He had four siblings: Charles, Emerson, Floreine and Dean. His friends and family lovingly referred to him as ‘Butch,’ ‘Jughead,’ ‘Cuz’ and ‘Pa.’

He grew up in Cottage Grove, eventually joining the United States Navy during World War II. His Navy time was spent mainly in the Aleutian Islands sailing on a small fuel

tender named the USS Teal. His main job was that of Navy Cook. They visited ports such as Dutch Harbor, Seattle, and San Diego. Toward the war’s end, Dellmer was stationed in Oklahoma, where he dated and fell in love with his future wife, Viola Dexter. They married on October 13, 1945, in Vernon, Texas, and at war’s end moved to Cottage Grove, OR. Upon his return to Oregon, he earned his High School diploma with the encouragement of his family friends, Russell and MaryAnn Smith, owners of the Smith Funeral Home. He brought his bride to live above that funeral parlor until they could set out on their own. Dellmer went into business as a meat cutter and third partner/owner of Three Boys’ Market in Cottage Grove before moving to Roseburg. There he took half ownership of Byrd’s Market, and managed the meat counter for many, many years with the loving help of his wife. Later he became a partner/owner of B & D Meats in Roseburg with Bill Herriot. When Del wasn’t in the butcher shop, he was tending his golf-course-quality lawn, steelhead fishing on the lower Umpqua river, traveling with his family to visit relatives in California and Oklahoma, and watching professional wrestling with his grandsons, Todd Franklin and Brett Brooks.

Del was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 68 years, Viola Franklin; and his son: Daniel D. Franklin and his wife, Carolyn (Jones) Franklin, recently retired to McMinnville, OR from Lake Stevens, WA; In addition, he is survived by his loving daughter, Rebecca (Beckie) Brooks and her husband, Leo Brooks of Sutherlin, OR. He had four grandchildren: Todd Alan Franklin of Winston, OR; Kirsten Lyn Franklin of McMinnville, OR; Angela L. Aurit of Hood River, OR; and Brett E. Brooks of Sutherlin, OR. Additionally, he is survived by five great-grandchildren: Tanner and Taylie Franklin; and Ezra, Elijah, and Elias Brooks.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2013 9 -10 a.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Chapel. A funeral will follow at 10 a.m. A private interment will be at Fir Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Veteran’s Home in The Dalles, OR, to Roseburg Hospice, or to any animal shelter of choice.
