Two marijuana gardens unearthed in Douglas County

Authorities this week seized two separate marijuana growing operations concealed on private property in rural Douglas County, the Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team said today.

Daniel Grenier, 51, whose town of residence was not available, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of unlawful manufacture and possession of marijuana after two sheriff’s deputies investigating an unrelated tip in the Camas Valley area found signs of a marijuana growing operation.

The investigation revealed a large illegal garden with 90 growing marijuana plants, each with the potential to yield one to four pounds, generating an estimated street value of at least $200,000, police said.

The narcotics team Thursday conducted an unrelated investigation on private and public lands in the Umpqua area west of Sutherlin, seizing 31 growing marijuana plants along with several plants that had already been eradicated.

Police said Donald Wayne Howard, 53, of Umpqua was arrested on suspicion of unlawful manufacture and possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon.

Police said a .44-caliber pistol was seized from the scene along with several smaller weapons.

Erin Elaine Howard, 49, of Umpqua was cited on suspicion of unlawful possession and manufacture of marijuana based on evidence of being an accomplice, police said.
