August 2, 1946 - October 13, 2013
Karen passed peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2013 in the home she lived in and loved for the past forty-one years. In her last days, she had the pleasure of seeing family and friends from near and far who shared stories, memories, and tears.
Born in Beverly, Mass. to Alex and Mae Rocha, she spent her childhood with her brother Steve and grandmother Nana. When she was twelve, the family moved west to San Diego, where she met her future husband Mike, eventually got married, and had two children Steve and Theresa. Shortly after that, a family vacation took them north to Oregon, where they visited friends and fell in love with the country and the lifestyle. They returned home and soon afterward were headed to Roseburg, then to sixty-acres of beautiful rural living. She raised horses, sheep, stock dogs, goats, llamas, milk cows, geese, ducks, chickens, pigs and rabbits, lead a 4-H group, and helped at the PTA, among other interests.
After raising their children there, she subsequently had six grandchildren that also spent time playing with the animals and learning about taking care of each other. Shortly after that, Karen and Mike adopted four foster children. Karen used her knowledge and compassion to build character and help these new children make the most of their lives as well. The kids share wonderful memories of family gatherings at “Grandmas” and riding around in her buggy.
She is survived by her husband, Mike; mother, Mae; brother, Steve; children: Steve, Theresa, Chelsea, Dottie, Alek, and Mariah; and grandchildren: Jesse, Alicia, Devon, Alessondra, Ryan, and Erin. Also by some devoted friends like Maggie Leonard and Tammie Ritchie. Karen had an immeasurable impact on many lives, and we will miss her dearly.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 26, 2013 1 p.m. at Sutherlin Family Church, 878 W Sixth Ave. Sutherlin, OR 97479. Flowers may be sent there.
