Helen Laura Simpson

A resident of Fortuna, California, passed away on October 24, 2013, in the Stanford Hospital. She was born on May 24, 1942, in the little town of Garberville, California. She grew up on the family ranch in rural Humboldt County.

Helen was a redhead, and had a vivacious personality to match. Her father nicknamed her “Red” and it seemed to fit her fiery nature. She never met a stranger and always lived life to the fullest. She could always be counted on in a pinch. By the young age of 12, she already displayed the extraordinary ability to show compassion towards others. Be they young or old, sick or injured, she was always there… Especially for those down on their luck. This instinctive ability to comfort and care for the sick or needy were refined through the years. As one after another, so many lives were touched by her kind heart and endless love. We will miss her smile and generous heart; she truly was an angel among us and will be sadly missed by all. She had an endless capacity for love, and perhaps she herself said it best in a recent newsletter, “I have never had much fortune…but I am richer by far, because of my beautiful family and all my friends who are so wonderful to me.”

From 1981 to 2005 she and her beloved husband Don lived in Douglas County Oregon. During that time, Helen and Don were team drivers for A&M Trucking for over 10 years, driving up and down the I-5 corridor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Alice Boyer; a sister, Gail Brooks; and three husbands: Richard Haselip; Robert Barber; and Don Simpson. She is survived by her children: Richard Haselip; Raymond Haselip; Terry Nelson; Sherri McCall; Ron Haselip; Wendy Derrick; Vicki Barber; Mike Simpson; Laura Newman; Samantha Collins; Justin Wagner-Simpson; and Desirae Wagner-Simpson; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four sisters; numerous nieces; nephews; cousins and in-laws. Not to forget the many friends and extended family’s that she encountered along the way. To all of which she kindly and willingly gave a helping hand.

Friends are invited to join the family in celebrating Helen’s life on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the River Lodge in Fortuna, California, beginning at 3 p.m. Come join her family and friends for an afternoon of reminiscing and sharing memories of all the good times we’ve enjoyed together.
