SUTHERLIN — A disagreement in a bar led to a fight that spilled onto North Calapooia Road early Sunday morning and left two men injured and two men in custody, Sutherlin police said today.
Tyler Dean Gunzenhauser, 27, and Blake Benjamin Ballew, 22, are accused of beating up two men outside The Office Sports Bar and Grille in the 200 block of West Central Avenue, police said.
The Sutherlin residents were each arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and third-degree assault.
Police and Douglas County Fire District No. 2 responded to calls of two unconscious men in the road around 1 a.m. Sunday, police said.
It is unclear what started the argument, Police Chief Kirk Sanfilippo said.
“Something was said or done in the bar that created some frustration,” he said.
Officers found one man semiconscious but unable to move in a drainage ditch in the 200 block of North Calapooia Street. The other male victim was semiconscious and staggering in the street.
Both men had sustained head injuries during the fight, police said.
Gunzenhauser and Ballew were not injured in the fight and fled before officers arrived, Sanfilippo said.
Officers took information from the victims and bar patrons to piece together the incident.
Sanfilippo said he was unsure if weapons were used in the altercation, but there may have been a rock involved.
He said there was “a good likelihood that alcohol was involved” since they were coming from a bar.
Ballew was arrested at his address around 10 p.m. Sunday. Gunzenhauser was arrested at his address around 1:30 a.m. today.
Sanfilippo declined to name the victims.
One victim was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, while the other was treated at the scene. They both went to the hospital, the second “primarily to support his friend,” Sanfilippo said.
The man who was treated at the hospital has since been released from Mercy, Sanfilippo said.
Second-degree assault is a Measure 11 crime. A conviction carries a mandatory sentence of five years and 10 months.
