Small airplane crashes on dunes south of Winchester Bay

A small airplane with two people aboard crashed just south of Winchester Bay around 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the plane is registered to Raymond Herbert of Florence. But Herbert said today he sold the plane a few months ago. He said he checked with the owner after the crash, and he didn’t want to be identified.

Winchester Bay Fire and Rescue responded to the scene. A call to the agency today was not returned.

The Coos Bay World that the two people, who were not identified, were taken to the Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay.

The plan was home-built and the FAA certified it airworthy in June 1989.
