Letter: Umpqua Community College president open to discussion

Bidding rules are enforced by the state

I want to express my appreciation to The News Review’s publisher, Jeff Ackerman, for his comments at the Umpqua Community College board meeting on March 12. His comments about the college bidding process and how we may support local businesses is well taken.

I want the community to know that the college operates under strict state-enforced bidding guidelines. However, I also want the community to know I feel it is important for UCC to support local business as much as possible. To this end, I have asked a local attorney to invite me to a regular luncheon with local business leaders to discuss our mutual benefit, and strategize how best to meet it.

I also welcome the opportunity for any Douglas County citizen, on any matter, to meet with me so I can understand your concerns. Please contact me at 541-391-2120.

Joe Olson

UCC President
