Letter: Retain separation of church and state

Let them decide

According to Dallas Heard, Republican primary candidate for District 2, evolution should be taught as an elective in the public schools rather than in science class. “I think you have to allow Americans to make their own decisions,” he said in a recent meeting with the editors of The News-Review.

Really? I wonder if he feels the same way about two plus two equaling four? Should the children make up their own minds?

Maybe the fact that the earth circles the sun could be taught in an elective class rather than in science because some people still think the sun revolves around the earth. The children could decide for themselves. After all, this is America.

Mr. Heard also says he wants the students to learn about creationism in the public schools. He didn’t mention if he wants to teach the Christian creation story with God, the Scientology story that involves Xenu the Galactic Overlord, the Hindu story with Lords Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, or some other version. Or maybe he wants to teach them all. There are many to consider.

It seems to me that Mr. Heard has a hard time distinguishing between the public schools and church.
