Vote “no” on Measure 10-131
Sutherlin pays Douglas County Fire District No. 2 $71,000 a month for fire service. It has free use of our firetrucks, equipment and fire station, including the ambulances. The district keeps all of the money it collects from using the ambulances. It also wants Sutherlin to give it all the equipment and the fire station if the annexation passes and pay even more.
Don’t be fooled. The district’s signs says “Stabilize our services.” As Roseburg keeps annexing more property, Fire District No. 2 keeps losing funds. It is not up to Sutherlin to stabilize the district’s service.
Sutherlin had a very good fire department that was mostly volunteers until officials decided to go into the ambulance business. That proved to be a loser. In an emergency meeting, the city council decided this and to buy an ambulance. The city made a loan to the fire department out of the sewer fund. The district was never able to pay the funds back, so the sitting council at that time forgave the loan. The sewer fund lost and so did the fire department. That’s when the city decided to contract with Fire District No. 2.
There is no reason Sutherlin could not once again have an excellent fire department using a mixture of paid and volunteer firefighters without running an ambulance service. The average fire calls are six per month. The largest number of calls are ambulance. Fire District No. 2 has a contract with the county to provide ambulance service. It seems to be using scare tactics that there will not be a professional ambulance service if Sutherlin does not annex.
On Fire District No. 2 signs, “EM” does not mean ambulance service. It is misleading. Please vote “no” on Measure 10-131. Keep local control.
