Letter: Former Sutherlin mayor recommends annexation into Douglas County Fire District 2

Vote to approve the annexation

As a past mayor of Sutherlin, it was my obligation to ensure services for the residents of Sutherlin. I can tell you that is no easy task, with ever shrinking revenue and increasing expenditures. I believe there are two fundamental functions of government: safety and security.

I have seen the struggle to find resources to provide adequate public safety, both for police and fire protection. We, as a community, have found a way to fund a top-notch police force. We now have a chance to secure the future for a quality fire and EMS service from Douglas County Fire District 2. I have heard the pros and cons to the annexation question. With an increase of about $14 a month we can keep and possibly improve upon the service Fire District 2 provides today.

If the annexation fails, the possibility exists the city will provide us with some form of service less than we now enjoy. The fire district cannot continue to subsidize our services. If the annexation fails, the fire district would be forced to evaluate the resources it commits to the city.

Please do not let this opportunity pass by, and don’t assume the city has a plan to provide the same services that Fire District 2 does. The city of Sutherlin could not afford to provide the fire and EMS services in 2010. From my past experience as a member of the council, I doubt the city is in the financial position to afford this service today or in the future.

Please join me in voting “yes” for the annexation of the city into Douglas County Fire District 2, along with voting “yes” for the city charter amendment that permanently reduces the city’s tax rate.
