Letter: Consider carefully before accepting petition to recall Sutherlin Mayor

Think before signing recall

A petition is being circulated in Sutherlin seeking the recall of Sutherlin Mayor Denny Cameron and some of the city council. I would like to encourage that we not sign. Give the mayor and the council members a chance to do the job they were elected to do.

The recall stems from Mayor Cameron’s position on the recent measure before Sutherlin voters regarding our fire department and disagreements with the city manager over this issue. Denny was motivated by fiscal prudence and felt that he was responsible for ensuring that Sutherlin maintain control of the fire department. Voters agreed with him. The recall seems to be sour grapes.

It is impossible to please everybody in public service. I questioned the mayor’s office regarding his position on the recent fire vote, and came to a different position than the one held by the mayor, but we were able to disagree in an amicable fashion.

Public servants who serve in our city councils spend a great deal of their time and energy trying to make our cities and towns work. I am grateful for the time they dedicate to making our communities a better place to live. It seems wrong that they should have to spend this time and energy fighting a recall for an unpaid position they are working their hearts out for.
