EUGENE — Dr. Stewart’s began the final stretch of its Class AAA American Legion baseball Area 4 season on a good note Wednesday, winning a pair of games from the Willamette Valley Titans.
The Docs won the opener 18-8 in six innings and prevailed 10-7 in the nightcap at South Eugene High School, improving to 10-17 on the season and 3-5 in league.
“We’re headed in the right direction,” said Dr. Stewart’s coach Scott Shaver. “We’re playing some good baseball and playing smarter baseball.”
Dr. Stewart’s stroked 17 hits in the first game, scoring eight runs in the top of the second inning. The Docs led 13-0 before Willamette Valley (10-21, 1-5) mounted a comeback.
Kyler Wolford was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs for Dr. Stewart’s in the contest. Justin Bennett went 3-for-5 with three runs, Tylan DuBois 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Zach Wyscaver 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Jake Forrester 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
“The bottom of the order is coming through and that’s important,” Shaver said.
Jacob Fricke started on the mound, but was taken out after two innings so the left-hander could be rested for Saturday’s league doubleheader at home against the Eugene Challengers. Fricke allowed one hit and no runs with one strikeout and no walks.
In Game 2, Dr. Stewart’s took the lead for good with two runs in the first.
Forrester finished 3-for-5 with two runs in the game. Three Titan pitchers issued 11 walks.
Chris Stone was the winning pitcher, going four innings.
The Docs will host Lewiston, Idaho, in a single nine-inning game at 7 p.m. Friday night at Bill Gray Stadium at Legion Field.
