ROSEBURG: Gas leak leads to evacuation

ROSEBURG

Gas leak causes evacuation

A natural gas line rupture caused by a construction equipment prompted firefighters to evacuate about 20 people from their homes this afternoon in the west part of town, according to the Roseburg Fire Department.

The line ruptured at about 1:45 p.m. at West Brown Avenue and West Union Street. The leak in the 2-inch gas line was capped about one hour later, said Deputy Fire Marshal Monte Bryan.

“This was a large one,” Bryan said.

Crews from Avista Utilities worked to repair the damage while Roseburg police rerouted traffic around the area. Most people reportedly were able to return home by about 2:45 p.m.

Bryan said he was unsure how the construction equipment was being used or how it damaged the line.

Fire officials are reminding people to be aware of underground utilities and to call 811 or go to digsafelyoregon.com before doing any excavation.
