Renegades lose in state semifinals

EUGENE — Zack Mandera gave the Roseburg Renegades the pitching performance they needed, but four errors against Summit doomed the Junior State team in a semifinal game of the Division II state tournament on Saturday at Willamette High School.

Summit won, 2-1, advancing into tonight’s championship game. Roseburg (21-11) will play the West Salem-Corvallis loser for third place at 2:30 p.m.

Mandera allowed five hits and no earned runs in going the distance, striking out four and walking none. The Renegades managed only five hits themselves and struck out 12 times.

“Zack Mandera did a phenomenal job,” Roseburg coach Tim Sustaire said. “It’s a bummer to lose a game when you feel you’re just as good as the other team. (Summit) didn’t earn a run and that is what’s frustrating.”

Terrell Jacks was 2-for-3 with a double for the Renegades. Sam Campbell knocked in Roseburg’s only run, singling in Garrett Russell in the third. Russell had singled, and stolen second and third base.

In Friday’s quarterfinal game, the Renegades scored five runs in the top of the seventh to rally past Crescent Valley, 10-7.

Campbell was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs for Roseburg, which overcame six errors. Paxton Shinn had two hits in three at-bats and knocked in three runs. The Renegades used three pitchers, with Stephen Assed getting the win in relief.
