Local Baseball Roundup: Docs prepare for super regional

Despite a below average regular season, Dr. Stewart’s still has a golden opportunity to advance to the Class AAA American Legion baseball state tournament next week at All Sports Park in Grants Pass.

The Docs (14-24) will host a four-team super regional this weekend at Bill Gray Stadium at Legion Field. Dr. Stewart’s, which finished fourth place in Area 4, will open the regional against the Three Rivers Sandblasters of Florence (11-15-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Rex Putnam of Milwaukie faces the Stayton Canyon Crushers at 4 p.m. in the first game. The double-elimination regional runs through Sunday, with the winner advancing to the eight-team state tournament.

“I don’t think we’ve seen our best baseball yet,” said Dr. Stewart’s head coach Scott Shaver. “We haven’t put all three facets of the game together. (Playing at home) is a big advantage. We know the field, but still have to play decent baseball.

“If we play with a good mentality and some emotion, we’ll be OK.”

Three Rivers, guided by Ryan Fobert, finished fifth in Area 3.

“I know they have a couple of decent (pitching) arms and a shortstop who’s pretty good,” Shaver said.

Tyler Dordan (Newport) leads the Sandblasters with a .446 batting average, followed by Taylor Travess (Springfield) at .409. Connor Qualley (Siuslaw) and John Dodson (Siuslaw) were first-team all-Far West League pitchers during the spring high school season.

The Docs will start right-hander Jake Forrester (2-1) against Three Rivers. Left-hander Jacob Fricke (3-5) will pitch on Saturday.

Shaver is expected to go with a batting lineup of Forrester (.308), shortstop Cory Finlay (.344), centerfielder Chris Stone (.281), first baseman Zach Wyscaver (.320), leftfielder Triston Garnett (.316), rightfielder Tylan DuBois (.306), catcher Wyatt McKnight (.329), second baseman Justin Bennett (.264) and third baseman Kyler Wolford (.304).

The Docs are hitting .284 as a team.

Friday’s winners will play at 2 p.m. Saturday. The losers meet in an elimination game at 11 a.m.
