Letter: Theft of political signs is childish

I put up a Peter DeFazio sign in my yard. You put up a Romney-Ryan one. Fair enough, that’s democracy. That’s freedom of speech.

But when you come along and deface my DeFazio or Obama-Biden sign, or steal it right out of my yard, that’s very different. That’s thievery. That’s acting like a punk. It seems we have quite a few folks in this county who fit that description.

The Douglas County Democratic Party purchased 300 Obama-Biden signs and gave them away to folks wanting to put them up in their yards. The DeFazio campaign has also paid for hundreds of signs for folks in the six counties of the 4th Congressional District.

A large Obama-Biden sign was vandalized out in Garden Valley area, and numerous ones have been taken from people’s yards. Last week there were four DeFazio signs and three Obama-Biden signs sticking up out of the trash can on the street in front of The Beacon’s office in downtown Roseburg. Of course, there’s no way to tell who had stolen them, but it’s interesting that they got dropped off at that location.

I don’t know of a single Romney-Ryan sign or Robinson sign that’s been stolen or defaced.

What does it say about someone who resorts to stealing or vandalism just because they have a different political opinion or are backing a different candidate? As Americans, we enjoy freedom of speech. Let’s keep it that way and act like grown-ups, not schoolyard bullies.
