Letter: Citizen recommends Baker for Roseburg mayor

Recommending Baker as mayor

I have served two terms on the Roseburg City Council under the leadership of three mayors and worked with Larry Rich during my final four years ending in 2002.

We have an opportunity to elect a new mayor on Nov. 6th and his name is Mike Baker. I have known Mike even before he became our councilor. Mike always welcomes citizen input and listens to what they have to say.

For example, after the previous airport manager resigned, a plan was conceived to maintain and manage the airport on a volunteer basis by utilizing aircraft owners based at Roseburg Municipal. As a former chairperson (as is Mike) of the Airport Commission, I had serious reservations about this concept. I discussed my concerns with Mike and he agreed. When the plan was forwarded to the council by the Airport Commission, it was deemed unworkable and voted down. As a result, the city hired an airport director who is also a pilot. He has a very impressive flight log book and is doing an excellent job.

Mike gives freely of his time, and is finishing his second term as a councilor in Ward 4. He has also given his time and expertise to numerous service organizations, such as the Boy Scouts. He is a family man and has raised his two sons and daughter to be good citizens.

Mike has a vision to help Roseburg grow and to attract new businesses to set up shop here, which will result in more jobs. Please join me in voting for Mike Baker for Roseburg’s next mayor.
