Roseburg demonstrates 'It's a Wonderful Life'

It truly is a wonderful life

The other night I was watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, that classic story retold at Christmas time each year. Perhaps because I am older now and had time to think about it, the story became a very simple message. Life is a series of relationships with neighbors helping neighbors, building a community because of their close ties. Little acts of kindness completed over a lifetime make a big difference in the outcome of many lives.

Well, I want to tell you that those generous hearts do exist and they live right here in Roseburg. It was midnight and a lot of us were waiting in line to check out at Kmart on Black Friday morning. It took a long time; it was very crowded and busy. People started talking across the aisles and joking about the situation.

My next stop was Macy’s, and the sale had already begun. But here I was stuck in a line at Kmart. And then the couple behind me asked if I could use a gift card for Macy’s. They said they never go there and “maybe it wasn’t even good anymore.” I was struck by their kindness. I want them to know that gift card bought five twin sheet sets that are going to the Samaritan Inn.

At this time of year, we are all given opportunities to be generous to the many organizations in our community that need our donations to help others. Small acts of kindness remind us that “It’s a Wonderful Life” after all. Thank you, precious couple from the line in Kmart. And thank you to all who share in giving to our community’s needs.

Merry Christmas!
