Letter: Thoughts on voting and the state of the nation

On voting and state of nation

I’m responding to the Public Forum letters “Obama won, America lost” and “U.S. is headed for disaster.”

First, every ethnic group, race, and age group the letter writers openly battered and categorized as less than true-blue Americans, totally on the dole, nonetheless are entitled to cast their ballots. The voting results from swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania have a majority of hard working middle class and many whites who voted for Obama. Oregon voted convincingly Obama.

My wife and I are white; we both receive “earned” Social Security. I receive an “earned” government entitlement from working for the Department of the Navy. We both voted for Obama. Should they hang us in the town square?

It’s not that many years since immigrants from many ethnic backgrounds, races and foreign countries came to our shores seeking a better life and relief from political oppression, including voting rights.

I’m extremely concerned about the future stewards of our beloved America and those who will lead our great nation forward, be they white, black, Hispanic, Asian, male, female, straight, gay or otherwise. We all harbor prejudices, but we’re all Americans. I share the concerns about the entitlement programs and qualification processes for those who receive benefits. Who’s to determine who should or shouldn’t receive benefits from the vast array of government programs?

We rely too heavily on television, radio, and newspapers for information. It’s either CNN or Fox News, depending upon your political position. Actually, many tend to live with the mushroom mentality: they feed us nonsense and leave us in the dark.

One writer questioned the patriotism of 20-year-old Americans. Did he question the patriotism of the thousands of older-than-20 Americans who fought and lost life or limb in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars?

For shame!
