Close loophole on gun laws
I want to share why I feel we must encourage the passage of Senate Bill 700, which will require background checks for all gun sales in our state, including private sales, and any exchange of guns between family members.
This bill will make certain that criminals do not have any legal options to obtain a gun. Today it’s easy for criminals to purchase guns from honest citizens in private sales, but Bill 700 will close that loophole.
Additionally, this bill can keep family members from a difficult position that may indirectly cause them to be part of a murder. For example, parents may own guns and also have a child who is into drugs or some other criminal activity of which the parents are completely unaware. Those parents could find themselves selling or giving a gun to a child who may use it in a robbery or murder. This bill will require that child to go through a full background check and thus remove the parents from being part of a deadly act.
Bill 700 is common sense. If we have a background check when we purchase a gun at Walmart, we should have background checks whenever a gun moves from owner to owner. I do not see background checks in any way infringing on my right to bear arms and others should see this plainly.
I would feel a lot safer going to a movie theater or knowing our children are in school with this law enacted. I encourage my neighbors to please consider this and encourage Sen. Jeff Kruse to vote “yes” on Bill 700.
