Former sheriff supports Hanlin
This letter is in support of Sheriff John Hanlin for his position and letter to Vice President Biden in regards to our Second Amendment rights. My name is Norman B. Neal and I am a retired Douglas County sheriff. I served from 1980 to 1989 as sheriff and retired from law enforcement with 33 years of service to Douglas County.
Guns are getting the blame! Everyone should realize that there is much more to the issue than just guns. Our government fails to share that these tragic and heinous crimes were mostly committed by people with certain mental issues. Government is trying to remove rights and disarm law-abiding citizens for the actions of a few. The gun issue, as presented, is about control and little else.
Our country is founded on some basic principles. After the Constitution was drafted, the founding fathers realized that without limits, government would become too powerful. The preamble to the Bill of Rights says, “... in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers ...”. They had concerns about government getting too powerful.
The Second Amendment appears to be considered the second most important right after free speech and religion. It says, “A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Sheriff John Hanlin is honoring the oath he took as sheriff. He has put himself on record to protect our rights. The sheriff is the highest-ranking law enforcement officer in the county, and we the people elected him into this position. His recent action deserves our thanks and support.
