Top-ranked 125-pounder Mitchell Lofstedt of Southern Oregon University, a Roseburg High graduate, was named the NAIA National Wrestler of the Week for the second time in three weeks after another dominant weekend of competition, the national office announced Wednesday.
Lofstedt, a senior, improved his season record to 26-1 with five victories in three days last week, including three consecutive wins against NCAA Div. I opponents to earn the 125-pound title at the California Collegiate Open.
A two-time NAIA national champion, Lofstedt will compete at Southern Oregon’s Bob Riehm Arena for the final time this weekend as the Raiders will host Simpson at 7 tonight and Pacific at 6 p.m. on Saturday’s Senior Day.
Roseburg High volleyball coach Bruce Myers, who guided the Indians to their first Class 6A state championship match in his final season, was among the 2012 Section 8 Coaches of the Year from Oregon.
Myers coached the Indians for 19 seasons before retiring after the season.

Recipients of the 2012 NFHS National Coaches of the Year were Craig Rothenberger (Junction City, boys basketball) and Neil Russo (Newberg, wrestling).

Umpqua Valley Gymnastics will play host to the Anne Patterson Riverside Classic on Feb. 23 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
Session times will be announced for the all-day event. Admission is $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors and kids.
Duos take titles
in golf tournament
Ron Miller and Tyler Miller teamed up for a 62 to win the gross title in the First Flight in the Kick Off Classic tournament at Myrtle Creek Golf Course last Saturday.
Other division winners included the teams of Brannon Smith-Mike Mooney (First Flight net), Steve Adkins-Steve Blackman and Randy Sahr-Dave Ayers (Second Flight gross) and Ron Edwards-Phyllis Edwards (2nd Flight net).
The day included two amazing shots. Kevin Geroux of Canyonville made his first-ever hole-in-one on the par-3, 163-yard No. 17 and Smith of Glide scored a rare double eagle on the Par-5 No. 1 hole by knocking it in from 240 yards. Thirty teams competed in the tournament.

Alex Palm of Roseburg scored a hole-in-one on the par-3, 135-yard No. 15 hole at Roseburg Country Club last Saturday.
Palm used a 9-iron on the shot, which was witnessed by Brian Winter, Brant Guido and Steve Philippi. It was the first ace of Palm’s golfing career.

Sutherlin Valley Recreation is holding registration for boys baseball (ages 11-12) and girls softball (16-and-older) through Monday. These teams will play in the Cal Ripken league.

The Roseburg High Softball Clinic, for girls in grades 1-8, will be held March 2-3 at RHS.
Depending on the weather, the clinic will run on the Finlay Field turf outdoors or inside at Robertson Memorial Gym.
The first day will include an offensive and defensive clinic — hitting, bunting, baserunning and fielding — and runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sign-ups begin at 9:30. The second day will involve a session for pitchers and catchers, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost for either session is $40, or $60 for both. A camp T-shirt and lunch will be provided.
All players should bring tennis shoes/cleats, gloves, bats, helmets (if they have one) and water bottles. The clinic will be instructed by RHS varsity and junior varsity coaches and members of the softball team.
