Sheriff is honoring oath
I have noticed the plethora of editorials excoriating Sheriff John Hanlin for his letter to Vice President Biden stating neither he nor his deputies would act in support of any new Federal laws deemed unconstitutional. He clarified his position by stating he would not enforce Federal laws resulting in gun confiscation or the disarming of citizens.
For those who find this confusing, yes, you do still have to obey all traffic laws! How petty to twist this to such ridiculous extremes.
For those questioning whether the Sheriff has the option of refusing to enforce Federal laws, please consider this. Is there any law that the Federal government would pass that could be considered unconstitutional? Would you violate your own conscience to enforce what you believe is an unconstitutional law?
Taking the oath of office requires that person to consider these questions, formulate a position, state that position and act accordingly. If no such requirement exists then the oath is meaningless.
Sheriff Hanlin has done this and I support him in doing so and in his conclusions. It is important for the people of this county to know exactly where their elected officials stand. He took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution; I believe he is honoring that oath.
