50th Anniversary: Briggs, Bob and Suzie

Briggs visit coast for 50th

Bob and Suzie Briggs celebrated their 50th anniversary at Newport. Visiting the Oregon coast is one of their favorite things to do.

Both Bob and Suzie grew up in Bandon, where they were high school sweethearts. They attended Western Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) in Monmouth. During their sophomore year, on Dec. 31, 1962, Robert Briggs and Sharon (Suzie) Conn were married in Bandon.

After graduation, they got jobs in Glide. Bob taught at the junior high school. Suzie taught at the elementary school, then became vice principal at the high school. Bob coached every sport: Glide Junior High baseball, football, track and field; freshman basketball; junior varsity and varsity football. Since Bob was an outstanding athlete in high school and college, this was a natural for him. For a time, he included in his schedule teaching special math for grades kindergarten through 12. The Briggses semi-retired in 1995, after 30 years, but continued as substitute teachers. Suzie served as the principal at St. Joseph School during the 1999-2000 school year. They worked for another six years before retiring completely.

For many years, Bob and Suzie hosted exchange students from several different countries. The couple also raised two children, Robb and Kelly, and one adopted daughter, Bruna. Robb and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Cottage Grove. Kelly and her husband, Robbie, are in Roseburg. Bruna and her husband, Peter, reside in Astoria, N.Y. There are 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The Briggses say the first 50 years have been great and they are looking forward to the years to come.
