College Basketball: Smith's basket gives UCC women win

PORTLAND — Asia Smith scored a basket inside with 2.2 seconds left in regulation to give the Umpqua Community College women’s basketball team a 76-75 Southern Region win over Portland Saturday afternoon.

The Riverhawks (17-8, 7-5 South) remained one game in front of Southwestern Oregon for the league’s fourth and final playoff spot with two regular season contests remaining.

Shannon Jackson led UCC with 23 points, hitting 11 of 14 shots. She added eight rebounds. Kyndal Charleston contributed 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and Rachel Sample had 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Smith had a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.

Kiara Berry had 21 points for the Panthers. A boxscore from the game will be published in Monday’s News-Review.


Portland 80 Umpqua 71

PORTLAND — The Riverhawks saw their playoff hopes end with a loss to the Panthers.

C.J. Easterling had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Portland (11-13, 7-5 South). Jared Knox had 17 points and seven rebounds, and Jeremy Smith 15 points and 10 rebounds for Umpqua (7-16, 4-8). Cole Gatewood chipped in 12 points.
