Glide has all the ammunition it needs to make a run at its first state wrestling championship.
The Wildcats — ranked No. 1 by Oregon Wrestling Forum — qualified 16 for the Class 3A tournament, which begins Friday morning at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
The championship semifinals are scheduled to start at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, with the championship finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.
“We’re pretty excited ... we’ve been waiting for this (tournament) all year,” said Glide coach Jeff Freeman. “This year, we’re in a different role and everybody is looking at us as the team to beat. We’re not trying to make too much of it, and just want to go up there and compete.
“I told the kids to win a state championship you have to go earn it. It’s not going to be easy. The quality of kids we’re taking is pretty good, and we have a lot of returning guys who have been there before.”
Nyssa is the defending champion. Willamina finished second last year and Glide was third. Vale, eighth last year and the team Glide beat this year in the Oregon Classic dual-meet finals, is a contender.
The Wildcats’ best state finish came in 2008, when they finished second.
Willamina and Vale each qualified 13 wrestlers, and Nyssa 10 for state.
Three Glide wrestlers who are defending champs are seeded No. 1 in their weight classes — junior Walker Damewood at 138 pounds, junior Jake Forrester at 152 and senior Luke O’Connor at 160.
Seeded No. 2 is junior Garret Short (152), while freshman Ian Quimby (120), sophomore Devin Freeman (126) and senior Michael Loomis (132) are No. 3 seeds. Freshman Ethan Melton (106) is a No. 4 seed.
